College Application Checklist 2026-2027

College Application Checklist for High School Seniors — Class of 2027- Are you ready?

September 2026 — Get Organized

Seniors should be creating a list of 10-12 colleges that include reach, target, and  safety/likely schools during the month of September. Students need to check application  deadlines and admissions requirements. Additionally, current seniors should be creating  accounts for the Common App and/or each college’s application. It will also be helpful to  set up a college application calendar with all deadlines listed.

High school applicants should also review their transcripts and make sure their  senior courses are correct. Also, students should make a list of extracurricular activities,  leadership positions, awards, work, volunteering, and other accomplishments. They  should begin their personal statements for the Common App and aim to finalize it within  the month, if possible. Students should identify 2-3 teachers or other appropriate  recommenders. Once identified, students should ask these recommenders if they would  be willing to write letters on their behalf and then provide these individuals with a  resume or activity list. Students should examine the requirements for the colleges to which they will be applying and determine whether or not they will need SAT/ACT  scores. They should check if they might be eligible for application fee waivers too.

October 2026 — Submit Early Applications

At this point, students should be finalizing their college lists and completing Early  Action or Early Decision applications, if they will be using these programs. Every essay  should be proofread and the short-answer questions should be reviewed as well. The  student should aim to submit an application several days before the deadline rather  than waiting until the night before the deadline. Official test scores should be sent to the  college, if the college requires them, too. To do this, students can log into the College  Board website or the ACT site. In October, students should verify that their  recommenders have sent letters to the colleges and thank these individuals again for  taking the time to write letters for them. The CSS Profile (if required by the college)  should also be completed at this time and financial aid documents should be organized  and filled out.

November 2026 — Regular Applications

Now is the time to finish any remaining supplemental essays. November 1st and  November 15th deadlines are here and students should be submitting in advance of  these deadlines. Students need to check every college portal after submitting an  application. They should confirm that transcripts, recommendations, test scores, and  other required materials have been received. Also, now is the time to start looking into  scholarships. Although some scholarships are contingent upon acceptance into a  particular university, others can be applied for now. Students should also, of course,  keep up with their schoolwork and maintain high grades during their senior year.

December 2026

In December, any applications due this month or in early January should be  completed and submitted. Students should also check college portals and their email  regularly. Financial aid applications should be progressing at this time and students  should continue to identify and apply for relevant scholarships. Finally, students should  be vigilant about their grades and stave off “senioritis”!

January–February 2027 — Financial Aid & Scholarships

Early in 2027 is when the 2027-28 FAFSA becomes available and it should be  completed as soon as possible. Students should check each college’s financial-aid  priority deadline and complete any college-specific financial aid forms at this time.  Additionally, students should attempt to become aware of all local, state, employer,  community and private scholarships they may be eligible for and apply for ones they

meet the requirements for at this time. It’s important to keep copies of all financial aid  documents and respond promptly if a college asks for additional information.  Additionally, students need to continue to check their admissions portals and email  regularly.

Keep These Documents Ready

It would be helpful for students to create one digital folder containing their current  transcript, their resume/activity list, the lists of colleges to which they are applying, their  personal statement, supplemental essays, test scores, recommendation information,  awards and honors (may be on resume), volunteer/work history (may also be on  resume), FAFSA information, CSS Profile information, if applicable, scholarship  applications, college portal login information, and application confirmation emails.

In conclusion, organization is key for the college application process during  senior year. If a student takes the time to plan the submission of the materials that he or  she will be providing to colleges for review, the student will be in better shape and the  entire process will be smoother. Allowing enough time for each step of the process  helps ensure that a positive outcome will be the result. There are a lot of moving parts  during college application season (and beyond), but an organized student is a better  prepared student, and if the tasks outlined for each month are completed in a timely  manner, the student will find that this process is not as overwhelming as it may appear  at first glance.
